Last week, Apple announced their yearly Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) for this year in June starting June 9. This is when Apple showcases their latest in software advancements and sometimes some hardware releases too. Let’s dive in as to what to expect at WWDC25 based on rumors, history, and my own thoughts and hopes.
One of the biggest annual announcements of the event is their next iteration of iOS, which will be iOS 19 this year. The rumors are saying that this next software release should be one of the biggest in the iPhone’s history. How exciting! First of all, as you may or may not know, several of the Apple Intelligence features announced last year as tentpoles of iOS 18 are heavily delayed as far as iOS 19 this year like on-screen awareness, personal context, and app intents. Those features will roll over and also be apart of the iOS 19 release, along with several other updates enhancing the Apple Intelligence experience.
While Apple never discloses any hints of any expectations for the releases, we can always speculate from rumors and our own opinions. Many of the rumors have stated that there will be an overall of the iPhone system as a whole, with a more consistent cross-platform experience. The design is supposed to mimic that of the visionOS platform with rounder icons and a more transparent design. Mark Gurman, a reliable Apple reporter, says its rumored that the changes “go well beyond a new design language and aesthetic tweaks.” While specific details are scarce, it’s supposedly the biggest update to iOS since iOS 7, and the biggest update to macOS since Big Sur.
To go a bit deeper, sometimes Apple leaves hints in their Apple event announcements that gives us a little clue as to what could be revealed. Last year’s WWDC (WWDC24), Greg Joswiak teased the conference by saying it will be Absolutely Incredible, with the A and I capitalized, clearly hinting at AI, but that was the extent of it. Leaning into those announcement theories, I saw one good idea that we could lean into from Joswiak’s post this year. Take a look and then I will get into it:
As you can see from the short animation, there is a playful and flowy representation of the WWDC25 logo. I have seen many people lean into the speculation that this event is going to be focused on the concept of fun. Many of the software updates have been, as you could call it, boring in the way that they are simply incremental. Hopefully Apple will bring something especially exciting for the customers! Something else that can be seen in this animation promo is the glasses, more translucent design, especially found in the 25. This could hint, as I said about a software redesign to iOS and several of the other operating systems to more align with visionOS.
My thoughts on all of this are that Apple always bring some exciting software announcements to WWDC, like Apple Intelligence last year, but this year seems like the year Apple might actually pull off a major overhaul of their operating systems. While Apple isn’t rumored to be announcing any hardware at WWDC this year, maybe they could surprise us with some sneaky announcements like maybe some new Macs or something unexpected. Apple is always full of surprises!
Overall, these are just some rumors and thoughts that I have so far and there will most certainly be developments between now and WWDC25 on June 9th. Apple is notorious for being unpredictable, so maybe these rumors are true, maybe they are not. We will have to see on June 9th! Watch the keynote with me on the Apple website on June 9th at 10am PDT.
