As some of you may have seen online, Apple has reportedly canceled is years long “Project Titan” electric car. But, an Apple Car may not be entirely out of the books yet.
A report from DigiTimes states that Apple is “assessing the possibility of teaming up with a certain US EV startup, and Rivian is a very likely candidate.” This would be a great boost for Apple to build an “Apple Car.” They have clearly admitted defeat in trying earnestly to build their own car on their own as so heavily rumored through the past decade.
This could also mean that Apple is developing software for Rivian vehicles. I would love to see the great Apple software incorporated into Rivian vehicles, maybe even better than CarPlay.
The report says that it’s “uncertain what form such a collaboration could take,” this report suggests that Rivian is the leading candidate, based on supply chain sources. It is unclear whether Rivian is interested in the partnership with Apple and what Apple is searching for in a partnership. Still, at least based on DigiTimes supply chain sources, it’s something Apple is “studying.”
I would not be too hopeful about this partnership, since the report is scarce on details and appears to be speculation among Apple’s suppliers. Nothing concrete is presented in the report, but this makes me excited. Rivian is my favorite EV car maker and they have created innovative technology, just like Apple has in their own field. It would be interesting to see how this partnership may or may not take shape. We will just have to wait and see.
