BREAKING: Tim Cook steps down from CEO

A new dawn is upon us folks…

The time has come, and today is the day that Tim Cook has officially stepped down from the helm at Apple. It wasn’t much of a big surprise to most (as there had been rumblings about a succession plan being in place), but of course it was shocking.

The plan for the future of Apple is for the former senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, John Ternus, to become the new CEO effective September 1, with Tim Cook to become the executive chairman of Apple’s board of directors. Also, Apple executive Johny Srouji will become chief hardware officer effective immediately, replacing John Ternus in that role.

If you don’t know who John Ternus is, you will definitely recognize him from this picture. He’s been one of the main catalysts for the launch of the Mac, iPhone, and more.

Reflecting back on Tim Cook’s tenure at Apple, he first joined the company in 1998 and was handpicked by Steve Jobs to fix the broken supply chain. As Jobs’ trusted right-hand man, he was trained to run the company’s daily operations while Jobs focused on vision. After becoming CEO in 2011, Cook scaled Apple into a multi-trillion-dollar giant by expanding into services and wearables like the Apple Watch. He prioritized privacy and sustainability, ultimately turning Apple into the world’s most profitable and stable institution before announcing his 2026 departure.

In my opinion, Tim Cook stepping down was probably inevitable. It seemed natural that during the 50th anniversary of the company that a transition would happen, and it was obviously something that had been carefully thought out and planned well in advance. Also, Apple has such a deep bench of undoubtedly future CEOs to choose from, like Ternus, Greg Joswiak, Craig Federighi, and Eddy Cue, just to name a few. With John Ternus taking over, Apple is likely aiming for continuity rather than a dramatic shift with an internal hire like him, especially considering Cook will remain as executive chairman with significant influence over major decisions, including leadership changes if necessary. That stability suggests the transition won’t be too drastic, but instead a steady evolution. At the same time, it is hard not to say good for Tim Cook. He has been incredibly successful, guiding Apple to unprecedented heights, and after years of leading one of the most important companies in the world, he has more than earned the opportunity to step back on his own terms and take a breath.

This is the end of an era, but not the end of Apple’s continuous momentum. With John Ternus stepping in and Tim Cook remaining involved, Apple is set to build on its success while steadily evolving into its next chapter.
